John G. Wright

A native of Hampton County, South Carolina, artist, art educator, curator and photographer John Glenn Wright often uses innovative formal juxtapositioning and associative imagery in his works to create commentary on American culture and his native South. A graduate of the University of South Carolina, Wright’s works employ elliptical allusions while documenting sometimes apparently ordinary scenes of traffic signs, Southern scenery, compelling natural forms, old structures, and compositional works; Wright often evokes a poetic sensibility with rich overtones of wit and laconic humor. His sometimes-cryptic references elude to his own personal history as a Southerner, to cultural clichés, and to a finely honed, wry sometimes-cynical evaluation of our common American culture. An interest in composition, design, and a minimalist aesthetic infuses much of the work presented by this low country native. Wright is currently teaching in Hampton School District One in Hampton South Carolina, and serving as visual arts coordinator for the district; he has served as guest faculty for South Carolina State University, Columbia College, Webster University, The University of South Carolina and juror for the South Carolina Governor’s school for the Arts & Humanities, as a board member for the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education Programs, and as Assistant Professor of Art at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina.
